If you’ve been searching what to wear for newborn photos, you’re probably seeing a lot of advice about coordinating outfits, shopping for matching neutrals, or building Pinterest boards of creams and soft colors.
And if you’re a new or expecting mom, that might sound exhausting.
You’ve just had a baby. You’re adjusting to a new rhythm. Sleep is limited, your body is healing, and the last thing you should have to worry about is shopping for perfectly coordinated outfits for the whole family.
The truth is, newborn photos don’t need complicated outfit planning. In my studio, everything is designed to feel calm and simple, including what everyone wears. Instead of asking families to coordinate clothing on their own, I use monochromatic studio setups, where the clothing and the background are intentionally chosen together.
This means you don’t have to guess what will photograph well. It’s already prepared for you.
Many of the families who visit my studio come from across the Quad Cities — Moline, Bettendorf, Davenport, and Rock Island — and one of the first things moms tell me when they arrive is how relieved they are that the clothing is already taken care of.
Newborn photography is very different from most family photos. These images are meant to feel soft, quiet, and focused on your baby.
Bright colors, bold patterns, and busy outfits tend to pull attention away from the baby. Even clothing that feels neutral in real life can photograph differently under studio lighting. Slight variations in tone can stand out more than expected.
When the goal is to capture your baby’s tiny features, the clothing should never compete with that.
This is why simplicity works best.
When everything in the image is calm and cohesive, your baby becomes the center of attention exactly where they should be.
Instead of asking parents to coordinate outfits at home, I photograph family portraits using monochromatic setups.
Monochromatic simply means everything stays within the same soft color family. The backdrop, the wraps, and the tops worn by parents are intentionally chosen to work together.
Because the tones match, the image feels peaceful and connected rather than busy or distracting.
This approach also removes the pressure from you. You don’t need to search for the perfect shirt or worry about whether colors will photograph correctly.
The clothing is already part of the session design.
Moms are usually the most concerned about what to wear for newborn photos, especially just a few days or weeks after birth.
In the studio, the goal is comfort and softness. The tops I provide are chosen specifically for newborn sessions. They photograph beautifully against the background and feel comfortable during the session.
You’ll be sitting, holding your baby, and leaning into those quiet moments together. Clothing that feels simple and relaxed allows you to focus on your baby instead of thinking about how you look.
The photographs are about connection. When you feel comfortable, that connection shows naturally.
Dads are included in the monochromatic setup as well.
Instead of bringing clothing from home, dads wear a simple studio top that coordinates with the backdrop and the rest of the setup. This keeps the image cohesive and prevents distracting colors or patterns from pulling attention away from the baby.
When everything is styled intentionally, the focus stays on the moment instead of the clothing.
You’ll notice the way dad holds the baby or looks down at them, not the shirt he’s wearing.
If siblings are part of the session, their clothing is kept just as simple.
Children photograph best when their outfits are soft and comfortable. Bright patterns, large graphics, and formal clothing can quickly become distracting in newborn portraits.
Keeping siblings within the same gentle color palette helps the image feel calm and connected. It also allows their expressions and their relationship with the baby to be the focus.
Children don’t need to be dressed up for newborn photos. The quiet moments between them and their new baby sibling are what make the images meaningful.
Trends in clothing change quickly. Patterns, styles, and popular colors often date photos without us realizing it.
Monochromatic newborn portraits avoid that problem entirely.
When the colors remain soft and consistent throughout the image, the focus stays on the baby and the connection between your family. These photos feel timeless because they aren’t tied to a trend.
Years from now, you won’t notice what anyone was wearing. You’ll notice how small your baby looked in your arms.
The simplicity allows the emotion of the moment to stand on its own.
One of the biggest reliefs for parents is realizing they don’t need to shop before their newborn session.
You don’t need to coordinate outfits.
You don’t need to order multiple options hoping something works.
You don’t need to stress about matching colors while adjusting to life with a newborn.
The studio is already prepared with the clothing and styling that works best for the session.
This keeps the experience simple and allows you to focus on what really matters: being present with your baby.
Newborn sessions move slowly and gently. Babies are fed, cuddled, and settled as needed throughout the session.
Parents often come in feeling a little nervous, but within a few minutes the room feels quiet and relaxed. There’s no rush and no pressure to perform for the camera.
You simply hold your baby, and I guide you into natural positions that feel comfortable and authentic.

Most newborn sessions take place within the first few weeks after birth. Because of that, many families reserve their session during pregnancy to ensure space is available when their baby arrives.
